2013 Pool Safety – What’s New for NJ Pool Safety?

It may not feel like it quite yet, but it’s time to prepare for swimming pool season in the Northeast! In preparation of this year’s swim season, I would like to share some safety measures that we have designed for our 2013 swimming pool projects. The pool safety techniques involve reducing entrapment risks and creating a safer pool.

The new safety measure we’ve implemented in 2013 pool designs revolves around water circulation for inground pools. Our new recirculation system is designed without swimming pool main drains. Main drains are used as an intake to recirculate water in the deep end of swimming pools, and they are the primary cause of entrapment accidents for inground pools. Entrapment normally occurs when a grate is removed from the drain or when main drains are improperly installed; if so, they can pull, trap, and injure swimmers, especially children. Fortunately, main drains are not always necessary for proper pool circulation! In most pools, by excluding the main drains, you can eliminate the primary risk of entrapment and improve your pool safety. Additional skimmers and returns compensate for eliminated main drains and circulate water efficiently.

Another exciting safety feature for 2013 is the automatic chemical injection system, such as Pentair’s Intellichem chemical controller. Chemical controllers have a number of benefits, including safety, convenience, efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness. The controllers precisely inject chemicals with automated testing. In doing so, the chemical injection systems reduce unnecessary costs and prevent damage to the plaster and equipment. Too few chemicals for pool sanitization can lead to serious illnesses contracted in the pool. Too many chemicals can lead to a host of harmful side effects as well. With programmable schedules and trackable chemical levels, the systems, most importantly, prevent the pool from operating at unsafe chemical levels. If the water does become unbalanced, the system will alert you. This system does not replace a service professional, but it does allow you to maintain the pool within safer margins between service visits.

The new pool safety measures will create a safer pool for you and your family. The chemical controllers will create safer, trouble-free pool water, and the exclusion of main drains will reduce the risk of entrapment, while making the pool-bottom more aesthetically pleasing. If you are interested in these or any other safety features for your new inground pool, consult with your pool builder about some of these safety options. Experienced pool companies should be able to address all of your safety concerns with a proven history of successful design and construction practices. Swimming Pool and Spa Controls? Pentair has an APP for That!

Do you have an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad? Do you have an inground pool in your back yard? These questions may seem completely unrelated. (Or, you may be thinking about how horrible it would be if your new iPhone fell into the pool.) But today, the swimming pool and communication technology industries have collided in an exciting way.

With the help of a wireless interface and a handy iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch app, you can control all your swimming pool and spa functions from the comfort of your living room, your train ride home from work, or even another country while you’re on vacation. Warm up the spa on your way home from the gym. Attract a dinner party out into your outdoor living space by discretely turning on colorful pool lights, waterfalls or landscape lighting. With the addition of a video module, you can even use your phone to keep an eye on your teenagers while you’re away for the weekend! (My parents would have loved that feature!)

The free iPhone app works in conjunction with the Pentair controls and wireless interface. An easy-to-use layout and a number of cool, convenient features make the app well worth your while. Remotely managing the pump, heater, and filter allows the pool to save on excess energy costs. Swimming pool lighting options allow for set themes and sweeping color displays. The system can track pool temperatures over time, provide handheld video surveillance, and send you an email if any problems are detected with the pool or spa. In this day and age, we have the world at our fingertips, and your swimming pool is no exception.  This is by far the one of the coolest swimming pool features we installed for 2011! Mahwah NJ
